Charles Lamb, a distinguished English essayist, collaborated with his sister, Mary, to create enthralling prose retellings for young readers of some of Shakespeare's most beloved works. This selection from their 1807 publications features The Tempest; A Midsummer Night's Dream; As You Like It; The Merchant of Venice; King Lear; Macbeth; The Taming of the Shrew; Romeo and Juliet; Hamlet; and Othello. "What these tales shall have been to the young readers," Charles Lamb wrote, "that and much more it is the writers' wish that the true plays of Shakespeare may prove to them in older years — enrichers of the fancy, strengtheners of virtue, a withdrawing from all selfish and mercenary thoughts, a lesson of all sweet and honorable thoughts and actions. To teach courtesy, benignity, generosity, humanity: for of examples, teaching these virtues, his pages are full." Simple and compelling, these vibrant retellings of the great playwright's timeless tales will undoubtedly charm readers of all ages.Unabridged tales from a standard edition.1 GradeSku: 9780486428437

Originally published in 2005, That Distant Land brings together twenty–three stories from the Port William Membership. Arranged in their fictional chronology, the book is not an anthology so much as it is a coherent temporal mapping of this landscape over time, revealing Berry’s mastery of decades of the life lived alongside this clutch of interrelated characters bound by affection and followed over generations. This volume combines the stories found in The Wild Birds (1985), Fidelity (1992), and Watch with Me (1994), together with a map and a charting of the complex and interlocking genealogies.Sku: 9781593760540

When Danielle, her grandmother Mathilde, and young brother Jeannot return to their village of Arsac le Petit near Bordeaux at the end of World War II, they are hoping for the best. But her parents, Pierre and Jeanne Dufour, and Marc, Danielle’s sweetheart, are still missing. In addition, they find that greedy villagers have taken advantage of the family’s absence. Now Danielle, Mathilde and Jeannot must all find work rather than give themselves to the restoration of their neglected vineyard as they had planned. In Danielle’s determination to reclaim a life for the family and to combat the injustice of the swindle, she finds new strengths within herself. These strengths eventually call forth an entire village to awaken to the challenges they face—to relinquish old ways, to stand for the right, to face hurts and find forgiveness. A new form of cooperation is afoot, thanks to “that girl of Pierre’s.”Illustrated by: Lloyd Lozes GoffSku: 9781932350142

Written during the dark hours immediately before and during World War II, C. S. Lewis's Space Trilogy, of which That Hideous Strength is the third and final volume, stands alongside such works as Albert Camus's The Plague and George Orwell's 1984 as a timely parable that has become timeless, beloved by succeeding generations as much for the sheer wonder of its storytelling as for the significance of its moral concerns.Sku: 9780743234924

From the Publisher: The Acts of the Apostles is an unjustly under-read text of the New Testament. Its story is by now old news. From its humble beginnings within Judaism, Christianity survived its first decades and emerged as the most important world religion. Yet bypassing Acts because we know the ending misses out on the unfolding drama of the time. The first apostles struggled against the Jewish authorities and even quarreled among themselves, often with acrimony that modern Christians find unsettling. We should think of the earliest decades of Christianity as a white-hot crucible of conflict rather than a flower quietly unfolding and blooming. Putting this text in the hands of intermediate Latin students allows them to build on their years of study of a difficult language with a reading that is not only well within their grasp but is also of enduring importance. This text includes summaries of each chapter of Acts, vocabulary lists, historical and contextual notes, informative notes and maps, a scholarly introduction to the context in which Acts was written, and multiple appendices.
Dale Grote earned his PhD in Classics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1989. He is the author of many scholarly articles on Sophocles, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as the widely used Comprehensive Guide to Wheelock's Latin. His last book, The Vulgate of Mark with Synoptic Parallels, is the first in a projected series of Latin readers for intermediate students based on the New Testament. He is currently at work on the third in the series on the seven "authentic" letters of Paul. He is associate professor of Classics at UNC Charlotte.

Dostoevsky masterfully depicts adolescence as a state of uncertainty, ignorance, and incompleteness, but also of richness and exuberance, in which everything is still possible. His tale of a youth finding his way in the disorder of Russian society in the 1870s is a high and serious comedy that borders on both farce and tragedy.Sku: 9781400041183

"A page in history was about to turn. Though Israel's world was in the throes of upheaval, it was only a matter of time before the sun of righteousness would rise. These people needed rescue, but they weren't waiting for the stars to align or for the political climate to change. They were waiting for God. They were on his timetable. He was sending his Messiah—Immanuel, God with us." For centuries God's people awaited the coming of a Savior. In the midst of a world of trouble, they hoped for one who would deliver them from evil and restore them to true life. Would God be faithful to his promises? Pastor Russ Ramsey narrates anew the greatest story ever told—the true tale of the coming of the Christ. It's more than the story of a baby born in Bethlehem; the story encompasses the whole of the Old Testament and all of human history, unveiling God's longsuffering, loving pursuit of his people. Rediscover how the purposes of God culminated in the coming of Jesus, in twenty-five readings ideal for Christmas or any season of meeting the Savior. Also including The Passion of the King of Glory and The Mission of the Body of Christ, the Retelling the Story series explores the narrative arc of the Bible from Genesis through Revelation in compelling language that is faithful to the text of Scripture. The stories are told afresh to help readers hide God's word in their hearts by way of their imaginations.Sku: 9780830843985
