Extra Practice for Primary Mathematics is a series of six supplementary books that will prove invaluable to students in their understanding of mathematical concepts.

Product Description

This series follow the topical arrangement in the Primary Mathematics U.S. Edition series.  The exercises generally provide problems of a similar style and level of difficulty as the course material covered in the Primary Mathematics U.S. Edition series.  The exercises are short and specific, so instructors may assign only those topics in which the students needs more practice.  This, together with the simple language used, will allow students to review mathematics with minimal guidance.

The practice material aims to consolidate and reinforce the mathematical skills taught in the Primary Mathematics series.

The Curriculum

The original Primary Mathematics curriculum was created by the Singapore Ministry of Education and written by a team of Singapore teachers. Singapore 4th grade students who participated in TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) in 1995, 1999 and 2003 scored top place for mathematics. They were using the Primary Mathematics series

There are currently three editions of Primary Mathematics series in the U.S. All three have been used successfully in U.S. schools and homes.

Primary Mathematics follows the five key learning models integrated in the Singapore math approach: Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach, model drawing, teaching to mastery, spiral progression and metacognition.

The Components

Primary Mathematics series of elementary math textbooks and workbooks is meant to be part of a system of learning in which adult supervision and independent practice go hand in hand. Students are provided with the necessary learning experiences beginning with the concrete and pictorial stages, followed by the abstract stage to enable them to learn mathematics meaningfully. This approach encourages active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas and problem solving, which helps develop the foundation students will need for more advanced mathematics.

Practice exercises are designed to provide the students with further practice after they have done the relevant workbook exercises. Review exercises are provided for cumulative reviews of concepts and skills. All the practice exercises and review exercises are optional exercises.

The teacher’s guides are designed to help teachers understand the course material and prepare for the day’s lessons. The lessons have been developed according to the approach and methodology central to the series. Detailed, step-by-step lesson plans and introductory content are provided to assist teachers in using the Primary Mathematics programs.
