While our curriculum has always spanned multiple grades, what we’ve done with Music Appreciation: A Family Study is to take that concept and expand it for (almost!) the entire family: 2nd-graders through 12th graders, and parents too!

Our desire and expectation is that everyone who uses this study (of any age) will become more comfortable talking about music. Music brings beauty to our homes, is a stress-reliever, and provides avenues for connection.

Cultivating a family learning culture where students at all levels learn together is one of the best parts of homeschooling. We hope this study fosters those exquisite moments as you delve into the amazing world of music.

Here’s how the course can work for the entire family.

• This is an INTRODUCTION to music. It will provide exposure to multiple genres of music as well as historical context to help us all – parents and children alike – to better understand and enjoy music.  It provides the stories behind some of the most well known pieces, and a peek into the lives of the men and women who wrote the songs that move us the most. These stories can be enjoyed by everyone.
• For high school students, if they complete everything in the course, they will qualify for a High School music credit.
• Guidance is provided on how to easily scale back assignments to fit the needs of younger students.

The core of the study is for everyone! In it you will: 

• Learn the names and stories of famous composers, from ancient times, to Classical, up through jazz and rock-and-roll.
• Develop your own music taste and preferences – listening to music together, discussion, and rating songs will become a centerpiece of your musical experience.
• Learn how to talk about music as your family builds a musical vocabulary together.
• Use the accompanying resource packet with composer portraits to color or paint, listening journal pages, instruments to label, and other activities that bring the family together at various grade levels.

Beautiful Feet Books has created a digital resource packet – one packet you can print multiple times for each student. This digital resource packet is accessible by QR code and is included inside the Teacher Guide. 

This packet comes with something for everyone, from your 2nd grader to your high schooler, all the way up through Mom and Dad. Learn how to identify the pieces of an orchestra, color instruments and composers, rate the music you listen to, and much more.

Use the included Beautiful Feet Books notebook to track your notes and projects. One notebook is included in the study and we recommend that each student have their own.

The 11 Spotify playlists will let you listen to the music in each era, for free. Take the playlists on the road so your family can listen while you ride. We’ve curated as much as possible so you don’t have to.
