As your student progresses, the fifth stage in the Classical Composition program is Common Topic. The set of exercises in Common Topic are more difficult to categorize by modern composition theory, but would likely fall under the descriptive essay. The students are learning how to amplify evil attributes.
They will use all of the previous skills learned in the exercises—narrative, expository, and argumentative—but must now apply those skills in a more creative and natural way than the previous stages. The Common Topic exercises look more like an “essay.”
The instructor on the Common Topic DVDs is Dr. Brett Vaden. Dr. Vaden is an instructor at Highlands Latin School and the Memoria Press Online Academy. He is a 2004 graduate of The Moody Bible Institute in Chicago with a degree in Biblical Languages.
He brings several years of teaching experience to this course, along with an extensive knowledge of Classical Composition as an editor of the program for Memoria Press. At Southern Seminary, Brett earned an Advanced M.Div. in Biblical and Theological Studies and a Ph.D. in Pastoral Theology.
