Reading lessons that use the elementary reader Charlotte Mason recommended!
A child who is advancing in reading skills thrives on interesting words and suitable challenges. Whether your child needs more reading instruction or just an opportunity to practice reading aloud, Mrs. Barbauld’s Hymns in Prose for Children is just the reader for that stage! Short fables, and such graceful, simple prose as we have in Mrs Gatty’s Parables from Nature, and, still better, in Mrs Barbauld’s prose poems, are very suitable. Even for their earliest reading lessons, it is unnecessary to put twaddle into the hands of children (Vol. 1, p. 205).- Make reading lessons delightful and effective.—If your child needs more practice recognizing words as he reads, you can easily guide him through Hymns in Prose for Children. The optional teacher book and bonus CD (included with the teacher book) provide lesson plans based on the wonderful methods Charlotte Mason recommended for beginning readers and that were used in From Words to Books: Delightful Reading, Level 3. The CD (and e-book download) include the word lists, along with PDF files of the word tiles and letter tiles that you can print as needed.
- Use for recitation and copywork.—Hymns in Prose for Children provides beautiful passages for your child to memorize and recite for the enjoyment and benefit of others. You can also use them to improve your child’s penmanship by encouraging him to copy the hymns, little by little, slowly and carefully in his best handwriting. Hymns in Prose copybooks are available.

Reading and Writing
Since students at this age still vary in reading and writing levels, Individual Studies, Grade 3, offers two tracks of reading and writing plans: A and B. Select the track that best fits your student and follow that track’s plans throughout the year. Track A—For students who would benefit from more reading practice and who are ready to learn cursive. Track A plans use New Friends, More New Friends, and Print to Cursive Proverbs. Track B—For students who would benefit from more reading practice or guided reading instruction (add the teacher book lessons) and more practice in either printing or cursive. Track B plans use Hymns in Prose for Children, Hymns in Prose Teacher Book (optional), and Hymns in Prose Copybook.English
Students progress in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and English usage guidelines through the literary passages presented in Spelling Wisdom, Book 1, and the guided discovery lessons in Using Language Well, Book 1. The first half of these books are covered this year, the rest in grade 4.Science
Use any of our SCM living science courses—such as Outdoor Secrets with The Outdoor Secrets Companion, The Pond and Stream Companion, or Learning about Birds with Thornton Burgess—and feel free to combine your children in grades 1–6. These plans will remind you when to do the next science lesson and keep you moving at an enjoyable pace, with some catch-up days included. This four-color, Gold Medallion Book Award winner is a perfect tool that offers solid, biblical answers to some of the tough questions kids ask about evolution and our world. “Did Earth begin with a ‘Big Bang’ cosmic explosion?” “Does science contradict the Bible?” “What happened to dinosaurs?” “Is there life on other planets?” “Did we evolve from apes?” “What makes my body work on its own?” Kids are daily exposed to the theory of evolution by the media and public schools. It’s not safe to assume that your kids will reject that theory. It’s up to us as parents and Christian leaders to make sure our children know the truth about the creation of the world. With thousands of evidences to prove He created and sustains the universe, It Couldn’t Just Happen will fascinate kids with fun activities and examples of God’s marvelous works.5 GradesSku: 9781400317141
