  • A child’s delight in a new pair of shoes is the same all over the world, whether the shoes are patent-leather sandals, straw alpargatas, deerskin moccasins, or wooden clogs. For Mako, a little Japanese girl, the new shoes were clogs painted with red lacquer that shone beautifully. This is the story of what happened after she cracked the new clogs playing the weather-telling game and so longed for a bright, shiny new pair to replace them that she almost did a dishonest thing.

  • Ten-year-old Flavius had almost everything a boy could wish for. His parents belonged to the Roman aristocracy, so they lived in a beautiful house almost as luxurious as a palace, on top of Palatine Hill. Flavius went to the finest school where he was treated like a young prince and he had a new personal slave or "pedagogue" to carry his schoolbooks. He also felt his horse was the best in Rome.

  • As far as I’ve been able to determine, giants come in roughly three sizes: ‘Very’ big, ‘Way, WAY’ big, and ‘Good grief, would you look at THAT!’ big. It is possible that there may be even larger ones, but I’ve never personally seen any. A few folks, mostly adults, contend that there are no such things as giants. I will not waste your time nor mine disputing such radical theories. They probably don’t believe in the Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy either. Blasphemy. In addition (and you may not believe this) there are folks who dispute the fact that hamburgers grow on bushes. Good grief…doesn’t anyone major in agriculture anymore? I know for a fact that a certain fast-food chain started this rumor. Want scientific proof? Well, there are pictures of several hamburger bushes in this very book. Jolly Roger

  • It was bedtime. Chris and his father sat down side by side on Chris’s bed. They talked of Chris’s friend Alexander, the red horse with green stripes. “Alexander was a pretty bad horse today,” Chris said. “He wouldn’t eat his cereal. He wouldn’t sit up at the table and he spilled his milk.” “That’s too bad,” said Chris’s father. “What else happened?” Their ensuing conversation of Alexander’s bad day makes for an entertaining read, along with its loving ending as Chris’s father remarks, “Alexander will be a wonderful little horse tomorrow and you’ll be a wonderful little boy, too.” Original retro illustrations by Tom Vroman.

  • The warm, tingly feeling that had been smack in the middle of Alvin Fernald’s stomach ever since Miss Peppersmith had closed and neatly lined up her books that Friday afternoon, had grown bigger as he and Shoie walked home from school. Now, here, in his hand, is the reason why! Alvin’s sixth sense tells him that the crumpled note holds a secret message in spy code, which is about to catapult the two secret agents plus Alvin’s younger sister Daphne, the Pest, into the intricacies of authentic code detection and the dangers of a newly stirred-up 100-year-old mystery. Even Alvin’s Magnificent Brain is nearly put on overload before the bang-up solution to the code and the mystery carry the three agents to an ending that is satisfying to all…well, to almost all. This classic tale from 1963 includes Alvin’s own notes on cryptography in an appendix at the back.

  • Ann likes red. Red! Red! Red! Go shopping with Ann as her mother and the salespeople persuade her to choose a blue dress, a brown hat and tan sandals. Ann wants red instead! Composed of 16 simple words, this delightful story of an independent little girl who knows what she likes, is perfect for a beginning reader. Illustrated in red and black.
“My mother bought me this book in a supermarket when I was six years old and I have never forgotten it. It is about a little girl who goes back-to-school shopping and insists on buying everything red. Evidently, I am not the only one who never forgot it—it has recently been reissued by popular demand. The book’s author is a former 1st grade teacher who used limited vocabulary to create a primer for kindergartners and 1st graders. But I loved it because it is about self-determinism!” —Julianne Moore, actress

  • To Ginny, almost anything would be better than living with the miserly, good-for-nothing, distant cousins who had claimed her and all she possessed when her parents had died of fever during the wagon-train journey to Oregon Territory. At the age of ten they had married her off—for a very good price—to a much older farmer, because girls were in great demand since married men could take title to twice the amount of land the government allowed a bachelor. On her fifteenth birthday, kindly Mr. Mayhew came to claim his bride. Unfortunately, on that same day he died of a stroke and Ginny, the young Widow Mayhew, was left in possession of his well-built house and flourishing farm.
