  • As far as I’ve been able to determine, giants come in roughly three sizes: ‘Very’ big, ‘Way, WAY’ big, and ‘Good grief, would you look at THAT!’ big. It is possible that there may be even larger ones, but I’ve never personally seen any. A few folks, mostly adults, contend that there are no such things as giants. I will not waste your time nor mine disputing such radical theories. They probably don’t believe in the Easter Bunny or Tooth Fairy either. Blasphemy. In addition (and you may not believe this) there are folks who dispute the fact that hamburgers grow on bushes. Good grief…doesn’t anyone major in agriculture anymore? I know for a fact that a certain fast-food chain started this rumor. Want scientific proof? Well, there are pictures of several hamburger bushes in this very book. Jolly Roger

  • During World War II, armed aircraft became more deadly and sophisticated as the Allied and Axis powers struggled for supremacy. Fighters, bombers, reconnaissance planes, and transports were rapidly developed by both sides and sent into the conflict. The technology changed so quickly that some highly effective planes used early on were outmoded before the end of the war. Now Carlo Demand, internationally known graphic artist, has rendered 46 planes of World War II especially for coloring. Among them, the "Enola Gay," the Japanese Zero used by kamikaze pilots, the German Komet jet fighter, and the spunky British spitfire that performed so valiantly in the Battle of Britain. Colorists will find detailed information in captions concerning authentic coloring, markings, and insignia, as well as information about design innovations, each plane's military role and affiliation, and other pertinent data. The illustrations are accurate and authentic, and as part of the Dover Pictorial Archive Series, may be used royalty-free. Thirteen of the planes are shown in full color on the covers. All of the planes pictured here are now, of course, obsolete; but for aviation buffs, military historians, model builders, and illustrators, these superb renderings will recall an era — a time when the needs of a global conflict spurred tremendous advances in aerial technology, both military and commercial.

  • One of the most colorful, innovative and deadly theaters of the Great War took place in the air. Before 1914 planes were toys for gentlemen-amateurs; by 1918 they had become precise, sophisticated machines. This book of 43 remarkable aircraft of World War I presents for coloring the most famous fighters, bombers, reconnaissance, sea planes and trainers of this crucial period in aeronautical development. Internationally known graphic artist Carlo Demand has rendered the planes for coloring in any medium, with captions describing each craft's design, history, and original coloring scheme (shown in full color for 14 planes on the covers). Color the Red Baron's Fokker Triplane, Rickenbacker's Nieuport, the Sopwith Camel, Spad S. XIII, German Albatros, American Curtis "Jenny," and 37 other accurately drawn airplanes in this vivid survey of the birth of military aeronautics.

  • It was bedtime. Chris and his father sat down side by side on Chris’s bed. They talked of Chris’s friend Alexander, the red horse with green stripes. “Alexander was a pretty bad horse today,” Chris said. “He wouldn’t eat his cereal. He wouldn’t sit up at the table and he spilled his milk.” “That’s too bad,” said Chris’s father. “What else happened?” Their ensuing conversation of Alexander’s bad day makes for an entertaining read, along with its loving ending as Chris’s father remarks, “Alexander will be a wonderful little horse tomorrow and you’ll be a wonderful little boy, too.” Original retro illustrations by Tom Vroman.

  • Alexander’s Bridge, Willa Cather’s first novel, is a taut psychological drama about the fragility of human connections. Published in 1912, just a year before O Pioneers! made Cather’s name, it features high society on an international stage rather than the immigrant prairie characters she later became known for. The successful and glamorous life of Bartley Alexander, a world-renowned engineer and bridge builder, begins to unravel when he encounters a former lover in London. As he shuttles among his wife in Boston, his old flame in London, and a massive bridge he is building in Canada, Alexander finds himself increasingly tormented. But the threatened collapse of his marriage presages a more fatal catastrophe, one he will risk his life to try to prevent.
