Based on Bloom’s Taxonomy, this book is designed to enable children to work independently. It contains ten units—one for each month of a traditional school year—and features the whale, cat, deer, horse, lion, elephant, kangaroo, robin, ladybug, and turtle.

The book contains activity plans and animal record sheets. Each unit also covers such topics as animals’ food, habitat, and adaptations. Comparisons are encouraged by a life-span chart, a “My Favorite Animal” sheet, and an “Imagine You Are an Animal” sheet.

The organization of the book is modular, which has several advantages. First, it enables children to succeed in each module, regardless of how they did in a previous module. Second, each module allows children to learn, practice, and expand on different levels of proficiency. Third, the modules allow for more in-depth exploration when a particular animal catches a child’s interest.
