A Midsummer Night’s Dream—Shakespeare’s flight of fancy and fantasy into fairyland—is one of his most beloved comedies. But its apparent breeziness should not obscure the fact that it offers the reader a deep, contemplative exploration of the true meaning of love.
Is what we call “love” something rooted in feeling and emotion and therefore irrational, or is it made manifest in freely chosen acts of self-sacrifice, inseparable from the act of making the rational choice and acting upon it?
Is it eye-love, love at first sight, cupidity? Or is it much too noble to enslave itself to the lower passions?
