With Book 5, the recommended schedule changes from every day to four days per week. For the fifth day, a hands-on geometry lesson should be completed from Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 1. These weekly geometry lessons give the student experience with mathematical tools such as a compass and protractor, and guide the student in understanding foundational ideas in geometry.
This hands-on approach develops the student’s comfort with the mechanics of tools, drawings, and geometrical concepts before formal geometry and proofs are introduced. We suggest that 5th grade students work on arithmetic Monday through Thursday, with Friday reserved for practical geometry.
For a complete Charlotte Mason grade 5 math curriculum, you will need The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series, Book 5, Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 1, and a Math Notebook for your child (sized according to your child’s handwriting).
Add the optional Practical Geometry kit for a helpful collection of geometry tools corresponding to the lessons. A convenient 5th grade math kit is available that includes The Charlotte Mason Elementary Arithmetic Series, Book 5, Charlotte Mason Practical Geometry, Part 1, and the Practical Geometry kit.
